LEDs – The Future is Bright!

This is not something new, for me, but given the energy and cost savings, I thought I would post about this. Lightbulbs: The Future Is LED is a topic that is getting more attention as people focus on efficiency and sustainability. Furthermore, more experts agree that Lightbulbs: The Future Is LED is a key area for future home upgrades.

LEDs are the most efficient type of bulb. They have great claimed longevity, give instant light, and work in low temperatures. Therefore, they are “The future of home lighting”, and many consumers now believe that Lightbulbs: The Future Is LED is more than just a marketing phrase.

  • They use very little energy
  • Last longer than other bulbs
  • Provide instant light – no “warming up” time

Shopping Plastic Free

I am not going to spend a lot of time on this piece – if you are reading this to start with you are already looking at ways to reduce your (plastic) waste, so here are some of the things which I am committed to doing:

Buy NO food in Plastic Packaging

Ok, this was a hard one, and on the 1st of October 2018 I bit the bullet and pledged to do this…. it is damned hard, to be honest! Things like bread, I don’t buy anyway, as I prefer to bake my own, but for fresh fruit and vegetables it is especially hard! So, I am trying to buy fruit and vegetables from the local grocers as much as possible. I have never been one for ready meals, and am trying to make my own pizzas (pretty much the only “ready meal” I ever purchase!).

The Milk Dilemma

After an extensive amount of research, and much frustration I have come to the conclusion that I (personally) have very little choice but to continue to buy the 4 pints / 2.272 litre plastic bottles of milk from the supermarket. This is all part of the milk dilemma many of us face when shopping for milk. In short, the milk dilemma truly affects a lot of people, not just me.

Choosing milk isn’t as straightforward as it seems. In fact, the milk dilemma complicates matters for those trying to choose the most sustainable option. This article explores the environmental impact of dairy milk versus plant‑based alternatives, helping readers understand the sustainability, ethical considerations, and climate implications behind one of our everyday food choices.

Keep Cups

Globally, KeepCup users avoid over 5 million disposable cups daily. Every minute around the world, one million disposable cups are used and discarded. I have used KeepCups for years.... not just out and about, but at home too (*clumsy* coughs). They come in a variety of sizes and designs - I love all the colours available - it is like the pick-a-mix at Woolworth's! Go out and Espress(o) yourself!

Smart Meter

Smart meters help you make better sense of the energy you use so you are in a position to both lower your bills and do your bit for the planet.

EDF fitted one for me today! I had someone come out last year to fit one, but they were unable to due to the layout of my mains electricity box layout, so I had to then get an electrician to move everything around, and go back on the waiting list… but finally I have one fitted!

Happy Scrappy Crochet Blanket

My mum taught me to crochet when I was around 8 years old. While her methods were anything but conventional, a few taps on the hand with her crochet hook soon made me get the hang of keeping my tension consistent!

I started making granny-square blankets- that’s as far as I got though! I never finished them… I actually finished my first blanket only 3 years ago.

Zero Waste Dressmaking

I finally have had time to write about the Zero Waste Dress pattern by Offset Warehouse!

Did you know that on average, 15% of fabric is wasted every time a garment is made? By designing clothes that are ā€œzero wasteā€, this can be eliminated – the sewing pattern uses all the fabric and nothing is thrown away. Offset Warehouse have put together this simple zero waste dress pattern so you can try it for yourself – Which is exactly what I did! (You can find the FREE pattern here).

Is the ā€˜Tiny Home’ movement finally catching on in Britain?

Guest Blog Post by David Blackhurst

For those who don’t know what it’s all about… There is a global trend which is growing in popularity around the world. The UK is now catching up! The basic premise is around minimalism, what do you actually ā€˜need’ to live and be comfortable?

When you start to strip away the shiny baubles, what we actually need/use on a regular basis surprises most people. I lived on a narrowboat for three years. However, I soon had to adapt to the ā€˜limited space’. At first I had things in storage. Over time, I came to realise that (after six months) I hadn’t actually needed anything which was in the storage unit. I was paying for it.

Zero Waste Gift Idea: A Photoshoot!

Following on from the December post (Season’s Greetings!), when I put forward some ideas for last minute gifts for the season, one example was missing in the ‘make memories, not waste‘ section…. gifting a photoshoot! Quite frankly, I had not thought of it at the time!

However Sarah won a Ginger & Browns photo competition, in collaboration with Bartley Studios! The Winning Photo showed a picture of Bambi the St Bernard and Rainbow the Shih-Tzu, looking up at Sarah. They are both wearing Christmas bandanas which I had made for them!
