When we talk about zero waste gifting, one of the most powerful shifts we can make is moving away from things and towards experiences. Experiences create memories, not clutter — and often leave a much smaller environmental footprint too.
Following on from my December post (Season’s Greetings!), where I shared some last‑minute low‑waste gift ideas, I realised one rather lovely option was missing from the “make memories, not waste” section. That option was gifting a photoshoot!

Sarah won a Ginger & Browns photo competition, in collaboration with Bartley Studios! The Winning Photo showed a picture of Bambi the St Bernard and Rainbow the Shih-Tzu, looking up at Sarah. They are both wearing Christmas bandanas which I had made for them!

So, on a chilly day earlier this year, we packed all four dogs and ourselves, in the mini, and set off to Warrington for the Photoshoot!
The Photoshoot
It took some time for the dogs to relax – Bobbin, especially would not settle at first! However, once they got in the rhythm of things, they turned on their inner-models, and some fabulous photos were taken! It was a wonderful hour of coaxing and bribing our doggy family to get into position / face the right way / stop licking drool of the St Bernard. Still, it was a fun day, and the photographer was lovely and very patient with us all!

The Preview
We were called back after a few weeks for the official reveal of the best photos selected! There was a cinema-like set-up on the ground floor, and both Sarah & I could not stop grinning whilst we watched the preview video!
We selected more photos than anticipated to be printed and framed for our walls, and these were picked up a few weeks after. In addition to these, we opted for a removeable hard drive with all the images taken. This was for the purpose of this blog post (and to set as screensavers, lol!)
Why a photoshoot makes a great zero‑waste gift
- No mass‑produced items
- No unwanted clutter
- A long‑lasting, meaningful result
- Can support a small, local business
- Digital options reduce physical waste even further
Looking back through these photos now, I’m so glad this experience happened. It wasn’t just about the images on the wall — it was the day itself, the laughter, the chaos, and the memories tied to each shot.
If you’re searching for a meaningful, low‑waste gift idea — for dog lovers or humans alike — an experience like this might just be the perfect fit.
A note on accessibility
If you’re planning a photoshoot — either as a gift or for yourself — it’s really important to talk through any accessibility requirements in advance.
When we arrived at the studio, I struggled due to the distance from the car park and the stairs to the studio space. As someone who is disabled and awaiting a back operation, this was painful and difficult, and something I wish we’d discussed beforehand.
