Smart meters help you make better sense of the energy you use so you are in a position to both lower your bills and do your bit for the planet.
EDF fitted one for me today! I had someone come out last year to fit one, but they were unable to due to the layout of my mains electricity box layout, so I had to then get an electrician to move everything around, and go back on the waiting list… but finally I have one fitted!
Another plus point is the convenience of having automatic readings rather than staying in for a representative to come round to take readings from your gas and electric meter (and given the location of my gas meter, in the far corner of a corner-cupboard full of baking bowls and equipment, this is a huge relief!). Smart meters enable two-way communication between the meter and the central system, so home visits are no longer required to take a reading!
Although some research shows that energy consumption is not reduced after a smart meter is fitted, I believe this is dependant on the individuals: If you look at the screen from time to time during the day / week, you notice times that are high-usage and start thinking about what is left on / what could be turned off. An academic study in Australia based on existing trials showed that homeowners’ electricity consumption on average is reduced by approximately 3-5%.
I hope that the fitting of this device will encourage my understanding of my usage, and cut my energy usage and bills – watch this space!
