Greening Scotland… One Home at a Time

Our new Home

You will have noticed that I have been very quiet for some time. This is partly due to health reasons, but also because we packed up our lives and moved into a pretty little cottage, on the North-Eastern coast of Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

It was quite the expedition with 4 dogs and a cat, but we made it in March this year, and have been settling into our new home, and enjoying the local area ever since. We have also had a Zero Waste Llama stall at some of the local producers’ markets in Banff, Fraserburgh & Peterhead!

The electricity bill up here – with no solar panels – was a shock! As a result, I have spent the last few months researching what to do as well as talking to a variety of companies, so that we can put some energy-saving changes into place.

In the rolling landscapes of Scotland, Arctic Improvements has emerged as a forward-thinking home improvements company, merging practical elegance with environmental responsibility. Their product portfolio—ranging from energy-efficient windows and doors to solar panels and garden rooms—demonstrates a commitment to greener, smarter living. They were the only company who I had spoken to who deterred me from Solar Panels!! In fact, the lovely Tina was the only person I spoke to who told me that it was possible to install ONLY the storage batteries (and no solar panels) and thereby benefit from Octopus Energy‘s low rates over night: By storing the electricity until it is needed (which will be even more useful when we have the car-charger installed next year!).

They offer a range of home energy improvement measures, and if you give Tina a call or message, and mention Zero Waste Llama, she will talk you through what they are doing for me in the coming weeks!

1. High-Performance Windows & Doors: Reducing Heat Loss, Boosting Efficiency

Arctic’s uPVC windows and doors aren’t just about curb appeal—they’re engineered for energy retention. The company’s windows feature multi-chamber construction, insulated beading, and premium Pilkington glass that reduces heat loss and leverages solar radiation for passive warming. Meanwhile, their uPVC sliding sash windows replicate traditional timber aesthetics while offering superior thermal efficiency and minimal maintenance.

These innovations align with a broader understanding: in older buildings, up to 24% of heat is lost through walls alone. Retrofitting with advanced glazing and airtight installations effectively ‘wraps’ a home in insulation, slashing energy use.(thetimes.co.uk)

2. Solar Installations: Powering Homes with the Sun

Arctic Improvements doesn’t stop at reducing energy demand—they also help homeowners generate electricity. Their solar systems offer clean, renewable power solutions that lower bills and carbon footprints, boost property value, and promote energy independence. Their installation process is designed to be seamless—from quoting to orientation—supporting homeowner ease and sustainable transition.

3. Streamlined Eco-Upgrades and Customer Experience

Upgrades with an environmental edge don’t have to be complicated. Arctic makes eco-friendly improvements accessible through a straightforward four-step process: design consultation, made-to-measure surveys, professional installation, and insurance-backed warranties.

Add to this limited-time offers like 40% off double glazing, free triple-glazing upgrades, and scrappage allowances (£2,500), and the result is both greener and more affordable.

4. Trust, Quality, and Real-World Satisfaction

Trustpilot reviews highlight immediate, tangible benefits—warmer interiors, reduced noise, and peace of mind. Customers consistently praise installation efficiency and professionalism, especially during early summer 2025. Arctic’s TrustScore of 4.9/5 from 271 reviews further underscores their quality, responsiveness, and reliability. (trustpilot.com)

5. Eco-Upgrades in Context: The Wider Green Retrofit Movement

Arctic’s efforts reflect a growing national imperative. In the UK, energy-efficiency schemes like ECO+ (the Great British Insulation Scheme) aim to cut household emissions and costs through improved insulation across housing stock (en.wikipedia.org).

Experts and advocates echo the urgency: retrofit measures—including airtight insulation, heat pumps, and solar—are essential to energy security and climate resilience. As one commentator put it, “Better and more energy-efficient buildings are one of the keys to reducing our consumption of and reliance on fossil fuels.”(reddit.com)

Yet progress is mixed—while loft insulation remains one of the easiest efficiency upgrades, installations have dwindled since 2012, leaving many households vulnerable to fuel poverty. That’s why companies like Arctic are vital: they make eco-upgrades accessible, reliable, and appealing.

6. The IPCC Perspective: Why Homes Matter

According to the IPCC’s Sixth Assessment Report, in 2019 the building sector accounted for 21 % of global greenhouse gas emissions, underscoring its significant role in the climate challenge. Of these emissions, 57 % were indirect, stemming from off-site electricity and heat generation, while 24 % were direct on-site CO₂ emissions, and 18 % originated from embodied emissions—the production of cement, steel, and other construction materials (ipcc.ch).

The report also introduces the “SER” framework—Sufficiency, Efficiency, Renewable—as a guiding strategy to decarbonise buildings, emphasising that the energy needs for decent living standards can be met with much lower energy use than previously thought—as low as 20 to 50 GJ per capita per year, depending on context (en.wikipedia.org).

7. Applying the SER Framework: Arctic Improvements in Action

The IPCC’s SER framework offers a lens through which Arctic Improvements’ work can be understood:

  • Sufficiency – Meeting needs without excess. Arctic’s made-to-measure upgrades reduce material waste while maximising efficiency. Their focus on replacing outdated, drafty fixtures ensures energy savings without unnecessary overhauls.
  • Efficiency – Doing more with less. High-performance glazing and airtight fittings lower heating demand, shrinking household energy use while improving comfort.
  • Renewables – Replacing fossil energy with clean sources. Arctic’s solar installations empower households to generate their own renewable electricity, boosting resilience and cutting emissions.

In short, Arctic Improvements doesn’t just offer home upgrades—they deliver climate-aligned solutions that put global goals into practice at the local level.

Why Arctic Improvements Stands Out

STRENGTHECO BENEFIT
Energy-efficient glazing & framesReduces heat loss, boosts efficiency
Solar systemsEnables home energy independence
Transparent, accessible processEncourages adoption of green improvements
Strong customer trustBuilds confidence in sustainable upgrades
Alignment with wider UK & IPCC goalsSupports retrofit & net-zero targets

In Summary

Arctic Improvements demonstrates that eco-friendly home enhancements don’t require compromise. Through cutting-edge windows and solar installations, transparent services, and customer-centred care, they empower homeowners to make greener, more comfortable, and sustainable choices.

By aligning with the IPCC’s SER framework, Arctic’s work becomes more than just home improvement—it is a pathway to climate resilience, delivering real progress toward Scotland’s and the world’s net-zero future, one home at a time.

So, starting with battery storage (and I will tell you more about that at the end of this week, when they are fitting my home with two battery storage units), I am setting out on my campaign for sustainability at my new home…. one bit at a time!

In the meantime, send Tina a message and mention Zero Waste Llama – she will talk you through what they are doing for me!
