Is the ‘Tiny Home’ movement finally catching on in Britain?

Guest Blog Post by David Blackhurst

For those who don’t know what it’s all about… There is a global trend which is growing in popularity around the world. The UK is now catching up! The basic premise is around minimalism, what do you actually ‘need’ to live and be comfortable?

When you start to strip away the shiny baubles, what we actually need/use on a regular basis surprises most people. I lived on a narrowboat for three years, but soon had to adapt to the ‘limited space’. At first I had things in storage, but over time I came to realise that (after six months) I hadn’t actually needed anything which was in the storage unit I was paying for.

Keep the High Street Shops ALIVE… help them THRIVE!

In November 2019, Eco Store, Weigh of the World, in Northwich opened - THIS was a game changer for me! Local, and a brilliant concept! (you can read my blog post here). In addition to buying my fresh fruit & vegetables from John Griffiths' Green Grocers in Northwich, between the two of these shops, I found that I had 99% of what I needed! However, many small, independent shops, both in Northwich and elsewhere, are experiencing a massive decrease in sales, despite remaining open during the lockdown - people are doing their main shops in supermarkets. Before your supermarket shop, visit your local, small businesses first! Then only go to the supermarket if there is anything which you are unable to obtain! It is more important than ever that we support our local businesses - especially through this time of crisis! Furthermore, buying locally reduces food miles, helps alleviate our dependence on fossil fuels, reduce air pollution and cuts back on greenhouse gas emissions. With that in mind, I have collated a list of independent shops in NORTHWICH who are still open and operating, and what shopping options are available. Independent Northwich Shops Open/Online during Lockdown: Abda's Coffee Shop: Coffee and Tea can be ordered through their Facebook Page.Artisans Online: The Northwich Artisan Market is now online!Crafty Stitches: Online orders are being taken for delivery on FacebookFirthField Pet Stores: Open for business.Ginger & Browns: Pet Supplies at Blakemere - Open for online ordersJohn Griffiths' Greengrocers: 10 Witton St, Northwich -…

COVID-19: Staying Home, Staying Safe and keeping up with your Eco-Friendly Lifestyle Part 6

Keeping safe within your home

The Government guidelines on all aspects of reducing the spread of COVID-19 are clear. The symptoms to look out for, and guidance for managing them, are regularly updated on the NHS or WHO websites.

In addition to my previous posts about wearing a mask, creating different zones in your household, washing hands and using hand sanitiser, etc. in order to reduce the spread of this awful disease and protect your household, family, friends and the public, there is an overview of other things you can keep in mind (what myself and my carer do), for your convenience below.

COVID-19: Staying Home, Staying Safe and keeping up with your Eco-Friendly Lifestyle Part 5

Environmentally Friendly Hand Sanitiser

CDC (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) recommends washing hands with soap and water whenever possible because thorough handwashing (You should wash your hands for the amount of time it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” twice (around 20 seconds) reduces the amounts of all types of germs and chemicals on hands – and I can not stress the importance of washing your hands frequently during the COVID-19 outbreak).

But if soap and water are not available, using a hand sanitiser with at least 60% alcohol can help you avoid getting sick and spreading germs to others. The guidance for effective hand washing and use of hand sanitiser in community settings was developed based on data from a number of studies.

COVID-19: Staying Home, Staying Safe and keeping up with your Eco-Friendly Lifestyle Part 3

Responsible pet ownership during COVID-19 Although there have been a few reports of dogs and cats testing positive for COVID-19, the World Health Organisation (WTO) has stated that there is not enough evidence of cats, dogs, or any other pets transmitting COVID-19 to humans as of now. Despite this, this is now the time to be sure to give your best friend(s) extra love and attention - this will benefit both your and your pets’ safety and mental health! Get the lowdown from this helpful Q&A from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE). The very least you can do is to wash your hands thoroughly before and after caring for your best friend, when preparing their meals or bathing them. After your pet does their business, make sure to disinfect the area thoroughly to make sure your best friend does not accidentally lick up cleaning product residue.  If you’re feeling ill, avoid close contact with your best friend! It is very important to keep physical distancing for everyone’s safety.

COVID-19: Staying Home, Staying Safe and keeping up with your Eco-Friendly Lifestyle Part 1

Wear a Mask – Slow the Spread!

With the combination of frequent hand washing and physical distancing, wearing a face mask can help to slow the spreading of the virus, according to supporting research. The wearing of a face mask has become the norm in many Asian countries since the onset of COVID-19, and more recently, the USFrance, and parts of Italy have also urged people to wear “alternative” masks – such as cloth face coverings.

Our local vets calling out for home-made face masks (all masks have been given to the NHS), but in other countries people are making for the hospitals, as supply is not meeting demand. During the past 6 weeks, I have been producing masks for myself, my carer and my mum (to use in the supermarket, when walking down the high street, etc.) in addition to around 30 masks produced for local key workers and veterinary surgeries.

To be clear this is a LAST RESORT mask for the NHS – and yet, during the past week, both my mother and I have been producing them for Physiotherapists and other staff working at Leighton Hospital, in addition to full sets of scrubs, scrubs bags and crocheted clips / headbands (which secure the mask behind the users head, to avoid rubbing the ears if wearing for a long time). The patterns and instructions for these can be found below.

Product Review: Bath, Bubbles & Beyond – Shampoo & Conditioners

Motivated by my actions and blog, Sarah (my Personal Assistant and, most importantly, my best friend!) started her voyage towards her plastic-free future, starting with some Shampoo and Conditioners from Bath, Bubbles & Beyond, which I chose for her at Weigh of the World, in Northwich.

After putting off the transition until she returned from her fabulous fabulous holiday over Christmas, she started the new year with a new hair-care regime, and was more than pleasantly surprised by the ease and improvement in making this transition!
